Stress is a part of daily life for most people. It comes from job demands, family expectations, relationships, personal goals, interactions in public places and of course traffic. I read an article from October 2014 on the Forbes.com website that stated “1 in 5 people quantify their stress level as “extremely high"". In other words, 20%of the U.S. population considered their stress levels extremely high! Can you imagine what that percentage is in 2016?
The stress triggers mentioned above are just a sample list of the causes of stress. Personally, sitting in extended traffic jams can cause stress for me. I recently had to endure two different jobs where the minimum daily commute was three hours on the Washington, D.C. area roadways. Ugh! The stress built to such an extent that each evening when I arrived at home, I would have to sit in the car for ten minutes to “detox” before entering the house! I didn’t want to spew the stress on everyone in the house. Some of you may have similar experiences.
When I thought about that period of my life, I was reminded of a revelation the Lord gave me in the past. I remembered that during the Lord’s earthly ministry, He already knew that stress would present itself in our lives. He understood that no matter what year, country or family we lived in, stress was still a part of what we needed to battle. Therefore, He wanted to be sure that we could win those battles and live joyful and stress-free lives. It may seem impossible but He gave us the way to do it.
This “stress killer” is found in Matthew 11:28-30 where He said, “28 Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” - NKJV
Stop and read those verses again. These words are powerful and life-changing. He directs us to come to Him with our problems and with our stress. If we make a choice and come to Him, He will give us rest from those stresses. In other words, He will provide peace and rest from our worries, frustrations and concerns. By surrendering your stress to Him, He becomes the “stress killer” in your life! That means we have to surrender it to the Lord and trust that He will make everything alright.
Now, there is one more point that is often overlooked. Besides encouraging us to give Him the things that cause stress in our lives, He also commands us to learn of Him. He wants each of us to spend time learning of His ways and who He wants to be in our lives.Only by doing this can you regularly experience less stress and more joy. This is the only way to continually experience smiling as part of your regular expression!
Now that you know about the Ultimate Stress Reliever, I want you to tell the Lord that you are taking Him at His Word and giving Him your stress, worries, frustrations and concerns. Tell Him that you understand He is a “stress killer” and the Ultimate Stress Reliever. Let Him know that you are receiving His peace that surpasses all understanding and you want to learn from Him. Make a heart-felt commitment to this and watch the Lord work in your life.
My parting words to you are to actively trust the Lord.Continue to learn from Him through reading His Word and praying. He will not disappoint you.
