Giving Thanks 7 Times

As we pass through the Thanksgiving season, I know many of you are full from all the food you ate and over saturated by the number of football games you viewed! I hope that you could mix in a good amount of family time also. I personally love Thanksgiving because it is a time everyone tries to take a break from his or her busy schedules and come together to fellowship. We rehash stories from years past that seem to become grander each time they are told.

Many traditions exist for the Thanksgiving celebration but most families take a moment to give thanks. Sometimes it is a brief “thank you for another day” but others like to give a long “sermon” on being thankful. Regardless of how it is expressed, most try to remember something that makes them thankful.

Recently, I challenged myself to think of seven reasons why I should be thankful this year. This was important because it has been a year full of activities and changes therefore I wanted to remember how good the Lord has been to me. My requirement was not only to list the seven reasons why I should be thankful but also to list enough detail as to “why” I should be thankful. This seemingly easy task began to take on more meaning. After some thought, this exercise opened my understanding of how involved that Lord has been in my life during this year. Additionally, this realization brought natural thanksgiving, which made me ultimately appreciate the Lord even more.

My challenge to you is to set aside twenty or thirty minutes to identify seven reasons why you are thankful. Additionally, take your time to list in detail the reasons why you are thankful. When you are finished, take a moment to re-read and meditate on the list. Give the Lord thanks for working in your life, even if you did not realize it at the time. When you do, you will answer the Psalmist who said in Psalm 107:15 -

“Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, And for His wonderful works to the children of men!”
